Under the Hood
Do you find spotting to be stressful?
"Yes, spotting is very stressful because I know how hard it is sitting in the car and the responsibilities involved. To be honest, I get more nervous spotting than I did when I was a driver. Did you know that you can't start a race without a spotter, a scorer and a driver? You don't have to have a crew chief, but you have to have all three of those people, according to NASCAR's rules."

Have you ever caused a wreck?
"Nope. I can honestly say I haven't caused a wreck. A driver might have, but I didn't."

Do you have to learn a driver's driving style before you can feel comfortable spotting for them?
"We have had drivers who knew where their car was more than others or people gave our drivers more room to maneuver. There was one driver who would scare you a bit because of the way he maneuvered his car. No, you don't have to know someone's driving style; you just have to pay attention to them."

What is the hardest thing about being a spotter?
"The hardest thing for me is giving that car on the track 100 percent attention the whole time. We have three teams out there and I don't know where they are until we come close enough to where I can see them. I'm looking at my car and I can see if our other teams are in front of us or behind us. Other than that, you don't know if they're having a problem or if they're running good because you're paying so much attention to just the car you are spotting for. During a caution, it's the only time you can relax and then you can catch up on where our other teams are running."

Are there tracks that are easier to spot at than others? Short tracks vs. superspeedways?
"Now we have really nice binoculars, so I don't mind spotting at superspeedways. With good binoculars you don't have to have a backstretch spotter anymore. I don't have a track that I mind more than others."
